Starbucks pledges to eliminate waste and encourages reusable coffee cups

Starbucks believes that green is more than a bold color for its signage or logo. It’s a reminder and aspiration to be resource-positive company that assists the planet in proactive ways. Starbucks shares some of its efforts in helping the company reduce waste by half by 2030, ahead of Wednesday’s annual shareholder meeting.

According to a press release Tuesday, the company will be introducing reusable coffee cups and a new app that will help employees sort out where their waste and recycling should go. The Seattle-based coffee company, Coffee Company, has been preparing to scale several sustainability initiatives over the past few years. This includes a pilot program that allows for the use of reusable cups. Johnson released a statement saying that Johnson had a bold, long-term sustainability vision. Starbucks has announced that it will eliminate single-use plastics in order to help achieve its goal and expand the use of reusable cups in six markets around world. The company claims that customers will soon be able use their own reusable coffee cups in the U.S. and Canada by the end of 2023 for both in-store, drive-thru, or mobile orders.

The company stated, “Our goal is to create a culture movement towards reusables” by 2025. Customers will have easy access to a Starbucks-provided reusable to go cup every time they visit. This makes it convenient and enjoyable to reuse wherever customers enjoy their Starbucks Experience. Johnson, who will continue to be a special advisor to the board until September, was announced by the company on Wednesday. Howard Schultz will act as interim CEO, and assist in the selection and onboarding process of the company’s next leader.
