For most coffee lovers, the pursuit of the perfect cup starts with choosing the right kind of coffee. The best K-Cup coffee pods will do just that. The coffee pods are made specifically to fit in a Keurig machine and can be found at specialty stores like Starbucks or Costco. They are sold in boxes of 18 and many different flavors at a time and they come in K-Cup packs.
Barista Prima House Blend
The top K-Cup’s medium-dark roast has a rich, smooth flavor and is very mellow. We found this to be a pleasing choice for most palates. It’s not single-origin coffee of high quality, but it’s still better than your average office cup. Barista Prima brands had a richer body than other K-Cups. However, some were so over-roasted they tasted like coffee from a hotel room with a smoker. This one is a good compromise.
Barista Prima Italian Roast
The dark-roasted brew is rich and velvety. It’s not for everyone, however. Each sip changes almost immediately from dark chocolate flavors to char.
Green Mountain Lake and Lodge
In my office-living days, Lake and Lodge was my back-up. This dark-roast blend of East African and Indonesian beans has decent body with a little roasty bitterness. It can withstand milk and sugar but lacks the rich body of the Barista Prima House Blend or Italian Roast.
The Original Donut-Shop Coffee
This K-cup is branded Coffee People and is called “Extra Bold Medium roast.” This K-cup is not to be confused by Donut House K Cups with doughnut-flavored flavors. It is bold coffee with a darker roast than you would expect from the label. It has a medium body (it isn’t as rich as the Barista Prima options), and the flavor is mostly roast with a little bit of chocolate underneath. There is a faint cardboardy taste that emerges on the finish.
Tully’s Coffee French Roast
This pod is marked “tres intense” — and it is. This roasty coffee was a little more drinkable than the Barista Prima, as it has a lingering charred finish and a nicer chocolatey flavor.
Barista Prima French Roast
The Barista Prima Italian roast is marked with “dark roast” on the label. However, the French roast is marked as “darkest.” This coffee has a pleasant, cocoa-like aroma. However, the French Roast is marked “darkest roast”.
Medium Roast and Lighter Roast
We were not impressed by any of the medium and light roast coffees. This level of roasting is where freshness shines or is noticeably absent. These are the lighter roast coffees, ranked from not-bad-to-not-great.
Green Mountain Breakfast Blend
This blend is a blend of Central American and Indonesian coffees. It has a little more acidity than some other darker-roast options. However, some people found it to be a little inconsistent and stale. It does not have the same body as the Barista Prima varieties.
Caribou Daybreak Morning Blend
Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee has been roasted lighter. The result is subtle flavors with a smooth cocoa backbone. It doesn’t have the cigarette-like char found in K-Cup, but it does not substitute for great coffee flavors. Some people complained that the coffee tasted a little diluted.
Green Mountain Nantucket Blend
Although it is labeled medium roast, this blend also contains French Roast beans. This blend includes beans from different continents. Although the result is fruity and chocolaty with decent body, it is not as strong as you might expect.
Vermont Country Blend
The blend contains a mixture of lighter and dark beans. It balances out fairly well. Some might find it too bright, while others might like it more. There is also a hint of chocolatey roast, which some might not like. However, there is a little bit of a gap in the middle of the flavor.
Green Mountain Our Blend
According to the Green Mountain people, this lighter-roast blend often contains Guatemalan coffee. Although it was mild, some would call it stale and weak. It is not as rich in coffee flavor or interesting as Green Mountain’s Breakfast Mix.
Cafe Escapes Cafe Mocha
This was something we wanted to enjoy, but it wasn’t coffee- or chocolate-flavored enough for us to be excited about. It’s sweet-sweet and sweet, but not as flavorful than what you would get if you poured a little coffee (even K Cup coffee!) The Barista Prima House Blend! Warm milk and cocoa mixture.
Green Mountain Coffee French Vanilla
This coffee is intended to remind you of vanilla custard. The scent is eggy and custardy. The flavor is a bit more subtle than we’d expect–there’s a dash of vanilla-scented-candle but it’s not as aggressive you might think. There is a slight sour note to the coffee that can break down the vanilla calm. However, you can get rid of that with some milk.
Cafe Escapes Cafe Vanilla
The creamy Cafe Vanilla coffee has a more subtle flavor than Green Mountain Coffee’s French Vanilla coffee. It also has a deeper vanilla flavor. Think warm vanilla ice cream and not coffee. It was too sweet for us. However, it might be good to cut the amount of coffee by half.
Green Mountain Hazelnut
This scent is a fragrance fantasy of Nutella flavor blended with butter. It does not have the real flavor of toasted filberts but the creamy butter notes make it a more enjoyable sipping experience. Light-roasted coffee is able to absorb the nut flavor in an easy way. It’s not bad, but it’s not as bad as they come.
Green Mountain Southern Pecan
Pecan flavors are almost praline-like. Again, the buttery flavors are as strong as the nuts. Although we wouldn’t think of adding butter to coffee, it can help reduce the bitter taste. This is not for purists but we would be happy to have a cinnamon roll with it.
Green Mountain Coffee Caramel Vanilla Cream
Green Mountain Coffee Caramel Vanilla Cream has a creaminess, but it is not creamy. It has a super-sweet vanilla-perfumy aroma, but it retains a bitter coffee taste that is not like Werther’s. It wasn’t satisfying to us.
Although your brain will need to adjust when the coffee isn’t as sweet as you expect, we enjoyed the rich body and smoothness of this flavored coffee. This coffee has a good balance and doesn’t have too much butter flavor. We were surprised at how much this turned out to be.
Green Mountain Wild Mountain Blueberry
Ever dunk a cakey blueberry muffin in your diner coffee? This is the idea behind this coffee. It’s scented with dried blueberries and spices. The result is full of the delicious flavor of buttery pastry and juicy berries. It’s bizarre and a little artificial with milk and sugar, but it’s strangely captivating.
Green Mountain Island Coconut
Although it’s not obvious why anyone thought coconut-flavored coffee was a good idea, this sample confirms that mistake. The flavor is very disjointed and smells just like toasted coconut on ice cream. It can be diluted with cream, but it is difficult to get rid of the suntan-lotion association.
Cafe Escapes Dark Chocolate Hot Cocoa
This is the best of both hot cocoas. It’s more chocolatey and richer, but it’s still not very robust. Is there a Barista Prima Hot Chocolate? We would love to have one. We’ll stick with the more traditional methods of making cocoa.
Cafe Escapes Milk Chocolate Hot Cocoa
It’s super-sweet and lightly creamy. If you don’t dilute the Cafe Escapes Milk Chocolate Hot Cocoa, it will be too much.
Cafe Escapes Chai Latte
It smells sweet, spicy, and delicious. The first sip will show you that this has more sugar than spices. It’s almost impossible to drink. This one is not for you unless you are a huge sweet-tooth.
